Direct Client Work

For volunteers seeking to work directly with clients:

Many clients have chaotic lives, tragic circumstances, and are very, very distressed. Sometimes, volunteers can feel similarly overwhelmed and distressed. There is also a phenomenon called ‚Äúvicarious traumatization‚ÄĚ, where you may feel similar victimization after listening to clients tell their story. Additionally, volunteers often have their own past experiences of abuse or assault. These similar experiences may be what gave you the passion to reach out and help others! Giving back and making a difference can be rewarding and healing, however, it can also trigger unresolved issues and pain. If you have not obtained counseling to work on past abuse or trauma, we strongly encourage you to do so before volunteering to work with victims. Due to potential conflicts of interest, we ask that current clients seek volunteer opportunities at other agencies. A client must have terminated services at least a year prior to volunteering with our agency. If you choose to receive client services at Friends of the Family, we will ask you to stop your volunteer activities. If you want to seek counseling elsewhere can provide some referral options. There are many volunteer options that do not include direct work with clients!

Considering the above information, please let us know whether or not you would like to work directly with clients.
