Welcome! Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer for the Denver Animal Shelter! First, we want to ensure you understand some of our basic volunteer requirements:

- Must be 16 years or older to volunteer

- Ages 12-15 must complete a Junior Volunteer Application and their parent or guardian must complete the General Volunteer Application

- Willing to make a 6 month commitment with a weekly 2 hour shift, totaling a minimum of 8 hours of service per month

- Attend Volunteer Orientation and a hands on training in Animal Care

- Willing to complete an initial 8 hour requirement in a high need foundation position

- Complete an in person or over the phone interview

- Pass a criminal background check

- Have regular access to email for shelter communications

Demographic Information

A date of birth must be entered for background check purposes. Each volunteer 16 years of age and older must pass a background check before beginning service. The additional information is used to help us get a better idea of the demographic make-up of our volunteers.

Volunteer Orientation

Please sign up to attend one of our next Volunteer Orientations in 2019. We will send an email with the next steps in the week leading up to the orientation you signed up for. If your desired date for orientation is not listed, this means that it is already full or we are not accepting applications for that date yet. We accept applications leading up to the month and a half prior to the orientation date.

Volunteer Acknowledgement and Agreement

I want to volunteer my services and time to the City and County of Denver, Department of Environmental Health, Division of Animal Protection (“Denver Animal Protection [DAP]” or the “City”).

I acknowledge that while I may perform volunteer services upon the request of DAP, I am not an employee of the City and County of Denver within the meaning of the Colorado Workers' Compensation Act (“Act”) at the time of my performance of these volunteer services. I acknowledge that volunteering time and services does not constitute employment for purposes of the Workers' Compensation Act of Colorado and further acknowledge that I am not entitled to benefits of the Act. I further understand that I am a volunteer and that no employee/employer or master/servant relationship is created between me and the City and that I will receive no compensation of any kind for my participation as a volunteer and that there is no promise of paid employment or future paid employment. There is no employment contract or other contract of hire between me and the City.

I agree:

1. That my participation as a volunteer is purely and solely voluntary and that I am not an employee, contractor, or representative of the City and County of Denver.

2. To abide by all rules, regulations, and procedures of DAP.

3. To report any injury immediately to the volunteer coordinator or supervisor.’

4. That if I obtain confidential or privileged information while volunteering, I shall not to disseminate, distribute, or copy any such information.

I understand that as a volunteer I may socialize animals, clean, prepare enrichment, transport animals, educate the public, as well as other projects as assigned. I acknowledge that participation in these activities and events involves risk of injury to any individuals undertaking such activities and participating in such events.

In consideration of the City allowing me to participate as a volunteer, I agree not to sue and forever release, waive and discharge the City and County of Denver and its respective employees, agents, representatives, officers, directors, and any associated or sponsoring agencies and entities from any and all liability to me or my personal representatives, assigns, heirs, children, dependents, spouse and relatives from any and all claims, causes of action, losses, judgments, liens, costs, demands or damages that are caused by or arise from any injury (including death) to me or my property. I assume all risks associated with my participation as a volunteer. I understand that the performance of these volunteer services may be hazardous, and I specifically waive any liability for injuries that might result from the negligence or carelessness of the City, its officers and employees, other volunteers, or the public.

By checking the box below, I give my permission for Denver Animal Shelter to take photographs while I am volunteering and use them in City and County of Denver publications and communications.

I understand that the City and County of Denver will not be responsible for loss or theft of personal property, or damage to personal property caused by the City, its officers and employees, other volunteers, or the public.
