Volunteering to help homeless animals is very rewarding, but can also bring on some challenges. A volunteer needs to safely participate in our volunteer program. Please review our essential capabilities information on our website

There may be some opportunities for those who meet some requirements, but not others. If the areas you have chosen for volunteer activities are not compatible with your abilities, you may be reassigned to another area or you may not be able to volunteer with us.

Are you currently an intern looking for opportunities? We may have some openings for internships, if interested, depending on the department and skillset. 

However, we are not accepting any community service volunteers for school or court appointed hours.

Volunteer Waiver


I, the undersigned, do hereby consent and agree that the Pennsylvania SPCA (henceforth known as the PSPCA), its representatives, and its employees have the right to take photographs, videotapes, or digital recordings of me and my property. I authorize the PSPCA, its assigns, and transferees to copyright, use, and publish the same in print and/or electronically. I agree that the PSPCA may use such photographs of me with or without my name and for any lawful purposes, including but not limited to such purposes as publicity, illustration, advertising, and web content.


We permit volunteer to take and/or publish both photographs and videos of PSPCA events, shelter areas, and animal residents open to the public. Permission from the Volunteer Manager must be obtained for photographs and/or videos of areas and animals residents closed to the public. Please note that the PSPCA has a population of Protective Custody animals involved in ongoing court cases that are strictly prohibited from being photographed, video recorded, and shared via any form of media by both staff and volunteers.

Basic Guidelines

-Volunteers participating in any social media forum must make it clear that the views they express are theirs alone and that they do not necessarily reflect the views of the PSCPA.
-Volunteers may promote PSPCA activities, provided it is compliant with any policies that may apply , and may include the PSPCA’s current logo, replicated only from the PSPCA’s official website or postings.
-Volunteers may forward or share information made public through the PSPCA’s official website, main Facebook page, or Volunteer Facebook Page as well as post information about animals ready for adoption.

Users of Internet Posting Must

-Speak respectfully about the PSPCA and former, current, and potential volunteers, employees, clients, partners, and competitors.
-Honor the privacy of current employees and volunteers by seeking their permission before writing about or posting photographs and/or video recordings that may be considered a breach of privacy or confidentiality.
-Respect copyright, privacy, fair use, financial disclosure, and other applicable laws

Users of Internet Postings May Not

-Disclose any information that is confidential to the PSPCA or to any partner of the PSPCA
-Violate applicable policies of the PSPCA, including those set forth in any and all volunteer manuals
-Defame, harass, name call, or engage in any behavior that reflects negatively on the PSCPA
-Speak on behalf of the PSPCA, or represent yourself as a spokesperson for the organization, unless given permission by the Volunteer Manager, with other staff if necessary

Volunteers can be disciplined by the PSPCA for commentary, content, or images that are defamatory, pornographic, proprietary, harassing, libelous, or that can create a hostile work environment. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to an including termination.


1. My services to the PSPCA are provided strictly in a volunteer capacity and without any express or implied promise of salary, compensation, reimbursement, or other payment of any kind whatsoever.
2. My services are furnished without any employment-type benefits, including but not limited to employment insurance programs, workers compensation accrual in any form, vacations, or sick time.
3. I will familiarize myself any comply with the PSPCA’s policies and procedures applicable to volunteers. In particular, I fully understand that the PSPCA expects high standards of moral and ethical treatment of the animals under its care. I will adhere strictly to these standards in my capacity as a volunteer.
4. I agree not to use the PSPCA’s telephones, email, internet connections, computers, documents, or other items or means of communication for any inappropriate purpose such as (a) profanity or vulgarity, including acronyms; (b) sexual or provocative content; (c) illegal activities, including drugs; (d) trademark, copyright, or patent violations; (e) hate such as racial gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or religious slurs; (f) disruptive or offensive content, including controversial political or religious topics; (g) slander and libel.
5. I understand that the PSPCA, without notice or hearing, may terminate my service as a volunteer at any time with or without reason.


1. I understand the risk of harm presented by the handling of animals and other volunteer activities on behalf of the PSPCA. I further understand that volunteer activities may place me in situations that could result in injury to me or my personal property due to the unpredictable nature of animal behavior and interaction of animals that come into the PSPCA’s care, custody, and control. I assume the risk of such activities.
2. On behalf of myself, and my heirs, personal representatives, and assigns, I hereby release, discharge, indemnify, and hold harmless the PSPCA and its directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all claims, causes of action, and demands of any nature, whether known or unknown, arising out of or in connection with my volunteer activities on behalf of the PSPCA.

I represent that I am at least 18 years of age, have read and understand the above policies, and am competent to execute this agreement.
