Thank you for your interest in becoming a UPAWS Foster Parent! The Foster Care program exists to help animals that have already been surrendered for adoption.

Once you complete the form, click the submit button at the bottom.

After you submit the application, you will be sent a link to our Foster Orientation Video along with a link to a short acknowledgment quiz so we know you have completed orientation. We look for a 85% score or higher on the quiz. You are always welcome to retake it.

Once that is complete, you are ready to foster!

By checking the box at the bottom of the page you hereby accept a position as a Volunteer for the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (U.P.A.W.S.), and accept and agree to the following terms and conditions:

1. Foster home should be experienced in the basic care and handling of the type of animal to be fostered.

2. Foster home should be qualified and have adequate resources and experience to provide for the medical and general care requirements of the animal.

3. Foster home should have the space to separate/confine foster animals from other animals in the home.

4. Foster home will contact U.P.A.W.S staff for permission before taking a foster animal to a veterinarian.

5. Foster homes will keep detailed records of any medical treatments and care given to the foster animal and relay them to U.P.A.W.S promptly.

6. All foster home current resident pet(s) must have up-to-date vaccinations and spayed or neutered.

7. If the foster home resident pet(s) contracts a disease  or is injured by a foster animal, OR if the foster home is damaged by the foster home resident, U.P.A.W.S will not be liable for any expenses associated with the foster home pet(s.

8. If the foster animal becomes lost or runs away, the foster home must immediately contact U.P.A.W.S, the local police department and animal control agency.

9. U.P.A.W.S has the right to inspect the foster home or to request the return of any foster animal(s) at any time, for any reason.

10. Foster animals will be assigned to foster homes at the discretion of the U.P.A.W.S staff

11. The Foster home will sign the U.P.A.W.S Home Foster Agreement before taking any foster animal from the shelter

12. My services to the U.P.A.W.S. are provided strictly in a voluntary capacity.

13. I fully understand that the U.P.A.W.S. expects high standards of moral and ethical treatment of animals under its care and I agree that I will adhere strictly to these standards in my capacity as a Volunteer.
13. I understand that U.P.A.W.S., without notice or hearing, may terminate my services as a Volunteer at any time, with or without reason.


I understand that as a Volunteer, I will be exposed to confidential information and I agree that anything I see or hear while volunteering will be kept confidential. This includes, but is not limited to, information regarding the identity of individuals releasing animals to the shelter and the circumstances regarding such release, the identity of individuals adopting animals from the shelter, the identity of individuals involved with any complaints or investigation, as well as information regarding the U.P.A.W.S. staff or other Volunteers.

Release of Liability

I understand that the U.P.A.W.S. handles a large number of animals on a daily basis, that the temperament of these animals is often unknown to the U.P.A.W.S. staff and that the U.P.A.W.S. can make no guarantee as to the health or temperament of any animal.

I understand that the handling of animals and other Volunteer activities on behalf of the U.P.A.W.S. could place me in a hazardous situation and could result in injury to me or my personal property.

I understand that the animals may carry illnesses and diseases that could possibly be contagious to people and other pets.

On behalf of myself, my heirs, personal representatives and assigns, I hereby release, discharge, indemnify and hold harmless the U.P.A.W.S. and its directors, officers, employees and agents from any and all claims, causes of action and demands of any nature, whether known or unknown, arising out of or in connection with my Volunteer activities on behalf of the U.P.A.W.S.. I understand that my own insurance will have to cover any accident or injury that may occur while volunteering.
