Community Service Guidelines

Please read this document in its entirety before beginning service with the Humane Society of Greenwood. If you have any questions, please ask before beginning service.

Dress Code

• The HSOG requires that all volunteers and those completing court ordered service hours wear closed-toed shoes during service.

• FOR SAFETY REASONS, THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE PROHIBITED: MINI SHORTS, MINISKIRTS, DANGLING EARRINGS OR JEWELRY, MID-RIFF SHIRTS. IF YOU WEAR ANY OF THESE ITEMS, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE.

• The HSOG recommends wearing long pants and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

General Safety

• Wear gloves when handling chemicals (for example bleach or detergent) or animal waste.

• Always use caution when interacting with animals. Even the sweetest cat or dog can have a bad day.

• Pick up or make staff aware of any potential hazards (loose blankets, hoses, broken latches or fencing, etc.)

Behaviors

• Refrain from screaming, yelling, running, or any other behaviors which may cause stress to the animals.

• In an effort to minimize stress, please move slowly and speak calmly around the animals.

• PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE COMPLETING SERVICE. THE HSOG RECOMMENDS LEAVING YOUR CELL PHONE IN YOUR VEHICLE, OR HAVE A STAFF MEMBER SECURE IT IN THE ADOPTION OFFICE. IF YOU ARE SEEN USING YOUR PHONE WHILE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE.

• All participants must follow recommendations from staff.

• If the work is not done properly, you WILL NOT receive credit for your time.

• The following behaviors will result in immediate dismissal:

o Theft

o Abusive treatment of animals (yelling or hitting)

o Disregarding staff direction

o Harassment of any kind towards staff, visitors, or other volunteers.

o Disengaged or not participating

Maintaining Animal Health/Safety

• Wash or sanitize hands frequently, especially between interactions of different animals.

• All cats must stay in kennels, except for the resident cats.

• At times there are certain dogs who cannot be let out of their kennel due to recent surgery or sickness; please follow instructions of staff as to which dogs are to be let out in the play yard.

REMEMBER: You are here to work, not play with the animals.

If you're bitten, scratched or have sustained any injury while working, seek staff assistance immediately.
