Medical Assistant Extern
Location: Free Clinic
Urgent Care
Duties: The Medical Assistant Extern performs a variety of significant administrative and clinical tasks.

Administrative Duties:
* Greets and assists patients at the front desk.
* Answers phones, provides information regarding clinic services,
and schedules patients when appropriate.
* Instructs patients in completion of registration and medical
history forms.
* Assists in filing of medical records and data entry of patient
records.

The medical assistant extern provides valuable nursing support to basic health clinics, sports physicals, and health screenings.

Clinical Duties:
* Calls patients into exam rooms
* Takes vitals
* Charts patient history and chief complaint
* Assists providers as needed
* Collects lab specimens and performs basic laboratory procedures
such as urinalysis and rapid strep test
* Conducts Friday health screenings for hyperlipidemia, diabetes and
hypertension
* Takes blood pressure to check for hypertension
* Prepares and administers medications with physician authorization
* Changes dressings, applies bandages, and executes other first aid
procedures
* Maintains stocks of medical supplies
Qualifications: Our medical assistant externs have finished their medical assisting programs, pending completion of their externships. We screen candidates’ resumes and transcripts and interview the most promising candidates. Successful candidates demonstrate many excellent qualities, including but not limited to:
* Excellent understanding of medical concepts, as evidence by school
transcripts
* Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills
* Dedication to patient needs and respect for patient dignity

Throughout the course of the externship, the medical assistant is progressively entrusted with substantial administrative and clinical responsibilities. The skills learned are relevant in many healthcare settings and our previous externs report that they have been able to leverage their experience here to obtain jobs upon the completion of their externship.
