Nature Education Program Leader
Location: Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge
Duties: Sherburne has a unique education in program that is almost entirely volunteer led. Nature Education Program Leaders will help coordinate and lead environmental education programs on a variety of topics for school, scout or other organized groups visiting the refuge or presenting a program off-site to a school or scout group.
Qualifications & Time Commitment: Must complete a volunteer orientation with the volunteer coordinator prior to volunteering. If appropriate, a background check may be requested. The volunteer should have good communication skills, enthusiasm, knowledge of plants and wildlife at Sherburne Refuge and a willingness to learn more. Experience working with children is preferred. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation.

The majority of school visits to the refuge occur in fall (Sept/Oct), winter (Jan/Feb), and spring (April/May). During these months, volunteers will be sent a schedule with field trip dates and times well in advance and volunteers are asked to attend at least one field trip per season. Each field trip session typically lasts for 2-3 hours with multiple sessions happening back to back on some days. Other educational visits may occur outside these times and volunteers will be contacted to assist with these if available.
Job Hazards: Potential hazards for this role include outdoor hazards such as scratches from plants (may include thorns and nettles), rash from poison ivy, tick/insect bites/stings, exposure to the elements, or sunburn. Other potential hazards include injury from slips, trips and falls, blisters or foot problems could occur from walking, strain from bending and lifting bins of educational materials, or injury from incidental encounters with wildlife. There is also a potential hazard of working with children including exposure to disease and unpredictable behavior. If the refuge is closed due to inclement weather, the field trip will also be cancelled.
