Event Assistant
Location: Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge
Interpretation-Education-Outreach
Duties: Volunteer assists with a variety of public events offered at the refuge throughout the year. Examples of events include the ski/snowshoe hikes, Spring Celebration, Wildlife Festival, and more. Needs vary with event or activity and may include prior preparation, event participation, set-up, clean-up, wildlife interpretation, being outdoors, or other duties as needed.
Qualifications & Time Commitment: Must complete a volunteer orientation with the volunteer coordinator prior to volunteering. The volunteer should have an interest in a selected program area. The ability to work with a variety of people, enthusiasm and good communication skills are preferred. Knowledge of plants, wildlife or program topic a plus, willingness to learn a must. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation.

Time commitment for events vary depending on the event but shifts are typically one-time for 2-4 hours.
Job Hazards: Potential hazards for this role include outdoor hazards such as scratches from plants (may include thorns and nettles), rash from poison ivy, tick/insect bites/stings, exposure to the elements, or sunburn. Other potential hazards include injury from slips, trips and falls, blisters or foot problems could occur from walking, strain from bending and lifting bins of educational materials, or injury from incidental encounters with wildlife. There is also a potential hazard of working with the public if they become hostile. If the refuge is closed due to inclement weather, the public event will also be cancelled.
