Maintenance Assistant
Location: Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge
Duties: Volunteer will assist the maintenance staff with a variety of projects on the refuge. Volunteer tasks may include projects involving the use of hand/power tools, training on and operating off road utility vehicles or heavy equipment, mowing, weed whipping, painting, carpentry, preparing event sites, hauling materials (such as wood), event-tent repair, snowshoe repair or sign posting including boundary patrol (Volunteers hike a length of the refuge boundary and replace worn out/rusty signage).
Qualifications & Time Commitment: Must complete a volunteer orientation with the volunteer coordinator prior to volunteering. Volunteers must be in good physical condition and able to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision and carry a project to completion. Volunteers should be prepared by wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and dress for outdoor work. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation.

Maintenance projects occur year round and require volunteer to maintain regular communication with staff to stay informed of projects. Commitment can vary to a project that takes a few hours to an extended projected that lasts a few days. Volunteer will be called on an as-needed basis.
Job Hazards: Potential hazards for this role include outdoor hazards such as scratches from plants (may include thorns and nettles), rash from poison ivy, insect bites/stings, or sunburn. Other potential hazards include injury from slips, trips and falls, strain from bending and lifting, injury from using hand or power tools, injury operating heavy equipment, and strain from prolonged periods of standing and lifting.
