Surgery Assistant
Duties: 1. Move animals into surgery cages, weigh and check-in, under the direction of a veterinary technician perform post-operative care which may include: blood draws, nail trims, ear cleaning, microchip implantation and giving pain medications
2. Patient monitoring, removal of ET tubes post-op
3. Clean surgery kennels
4. Clip/Prep surgery site, move animals in and out of surgical suite under the direction of a veterinarian and/or veterinary technician
5. Fill out surgical techniques on surgery paperwork
6. Volunteers must comprehend detailed policy and follow shelter protocols
7. Communicate professionally with staff and other volunteers
Qualifications: ***Mobility, to include standing for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, moving at a quick pace, etc.
***The ability to reach and lift up to 40 lbs.
***Visual acuity including close vision, distance vision and depth perception
***Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
***Ability to handle sharps following the Sharps Safety Protocol
***Quick reflexes and ability to use both hands simultaneously (example: open cage door while handling an animal)
***High level of manual dexterity
***Ability to hear instructions across the room
***Ability to maneuver well in tight spaces
***Must not have strong allergies to animals or cleaning chemicals
***Ability to cope with strong and unpleasant odors, fleas, feces, blood and urine
***Ability to cope with a loud environment
***Ability to push carts with heavy laundry and load/unload bins
***Understand risk of exposure to potentially zoonotic diseases
Minimum age:19
Volunteers serve up to: 8 hours Monthly
