Friendly Callers
Duties:

Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels has always been about more than a daily food delivery. Our clients rely on their daily visit for a bit of conversation and a smiling face. And we at YMOW rely on those face-to-face interactions as reassurance of the client’s well-being As a Friendly Caller, you provide a weekly call and wellness check for YMOW clients who are feeling isolated. After each call, you will complete a survey of questions gauging each client's physical and emotional well-being. You also will assess their needs for food, medicine, non-food essentials and additional support.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Call and connect with clients weekly, monthly, or bimonthly. Commit to a consistent day and time for each client to be called
  2. Fill out online survey after each call
  3. Report service hours via Volunteer Information Center
  4. Maintain client confidential information
  5. Contact appropriate YMOW staff person with follow up needs for each client
  6. Be alert for changes in recipients’ condition and/or emergency situations and report to the appropriate staff
  7. Provide excellent customer service, which includes being cordial and attentive to the individual needs of each client
  8. Work as a cooperative team member!

Qualifications:

Qualifications

  1. High school education/GED and at least 18 years old
  2. Have a personal phone they are willing to use to make calls to clients
  3. Have a computer or smart phone with which to complete the online survey for each call
  4. Able to take notes/fill out the survey while speaking with the client or immediately after
  5. Keep all client information confidential and abide by YMOW's privacy rules
  6. Be able to pass a background check, Michigan and National Sex Offender Registry search (conducted by Volunteer Coordinator)
  7. Complete program and HIPAA training
  8. Commit to at least 6 months of consistent calls
  9. Knowledge of services provided by YMOW and local organizations and resources 
  10. Exceptional conversational skills and loves working with people, especially the elderly population and/or those with disabilities
  11. Reliability, time management and organizational skills
  12. Committed to the vision of YMOW
