Help topic:  Opportunity Directory

Use the opportunity directory feature to provide prospective volunteers and others who visit your web site with information about your volunteer opportunities. You insert a simple HTML tag on one or more of your web pages to add the opportunity directory to your web site. Your directory can include the information you choose for any assignments you specify, such as the job description and minimum age. You can update your directory by adding and removing assignments or changing assignment information from within Volgistics without having to make any changes to your web site.

This is an example of an opportunity directory:

Setup the opportunity directory feature

To setup the opportunity directory:

1. Choose Setup from the menu.

2. Select “Online forms."

3. Select “Opportunity directory."

4. Configure the settings for the opportunity directory to suit your needs.

5. Make a note of your organization’s ‘public account identifier.’ It appears on the Opportunity Directory setup page.

6. Click the Save button.

Creating links to your opportunity directory

You can create links to your opportunity directory two ways. One way is to place the directory directly onto one (or more) of your web pages using an HTML ‘inline frame.’ This approach gives the directory an integrated look, and does not cause a new window to open in your visitor’s browser. The second way is to open the directory in a new browser window using a simple hyperlink.

In order to create a link to your opportunity directory you must know the ‘public account identifier’ for your Volgistics account. If you don’t know your Volgistics public account identifier you can obtain it from the opportunity directory setup page as described in the steps listed above.

Integrating the directory with your own web page

To include the directory on a page in your web site insert the following HTML tag at an appropriate location on the web page you choose.

Be sure to replace {public account identifier} with your own public account identifier. The link will not work without this. For example, if your public account identifier were ‘1234,’ your link would look like this:

You can integrate this iframe with the other standard elements of your web site. For example, you might include your web site’s usual menu and graphics on the page, or add the iframe directly to an existing web page.

For best results, locate this link on a page that has adequate space for the width and height of the directory. You can control the width and height of the directory by changing the “WIDTH=" and “HEIGHT=" values in the IFRAME tag. Make your frame large enough to accommodate your assignment list and a typical job description. If necessary, experiment with different width and height settings until you find an optimal size.

Opening the directory in a new browser window

If you would rather open your opportunity directory in a new browser window, use the following HTML hyperlink:

Be sure to replace {public account identifier} with your own public account identifier. The link will not work without this. For example, if your public account identifier were ‘1234,’ your link would look like this:

With either style link, you can control the background color and font characteristics for your opportunity directory on the Ground Rules page for Online Forms.

Choosing the assignments you want to appear on the directory

Your opportunity directory includes only the active volunteer assignments you choose.

To include a specific assignment on your directory:

1. Choose Assignments from the menu.

2. Click on the name of an Assignment you want to include in your directory

3. Check the ‘Advertise’ checkbox on the Assignment tab.

4. Click the Save button.

Only active assignments with the ‘Advertise’ checkbox checked appear in your opportunity directory. To remove an assignment from your directory simply un-check this checkbox or change the assignment’s Status to ‘Inactive.’
